My husband is currently trying hard to leave his current job in Allentown. He wants to work at a college. He is applying to West Chester University. I have no idea if he will even get a call, but this job would require a move. I'm not that familiar with the area down there, since we barely travel down that way. We currently live in Northampton and rent an apartment. But if he would get the offer, he said he would take it. I'm pretty sure the job would be a considerable pay increase, however, I would then be out of a jobat the hospital I work at (Lehigh Valley Hospital). He doesn't want to drive the 1hr 30min drive for long if he gets it. So,

Are there hospital networks in the area? I would prefer to live/work in a small town. I don't want to work in the city of Philly. Also, we would rent if we moved. I have noticed that housing seems to be more expensive. Is it possible to live in a decent area once you buy a house in the range of 150k-200k??

When are you moving?
This is a potential move.
Where are you coming from?
Northampton, PA (Lehigh Valley)
Why are you moving?
If my husband gets a job at West Chester Uni
Where will you be working?
I don't know. Are there hospitals in the area? I'm not a nurse. I deal with insurance and don't make near the same amount of salary as a nurse.
Have you been here yet? No.

Will you buy or rent?
Rent
If buying, are you looking for a house or a condo? How much can you spend?

If renting, are you looking for an apartment, a townhouse or loft? How much can you spend?

We would need to rentand would like to pay less than 1k for an apartment. Do you prefer hi-rise or walk up? Walk up

Do you have a preference of living in a NJ or PA suburb?
PA
(If you answered NJ - post your answers here: //www.city-data.com/forum/new-j...-philadelphia/)

Are you married or single? Do you have children?
Married. No children.
Do you prefer public or private schools?
Public
Do you have pets?
Dog and he isn't going anywhere. An apartment would need to allow dogs.
Do you want or need a yard?
It would be nice, but we need a plot or something for our dog.
Are you keeping a car?
Yes.
Do you prefer bustling activity or calm and quiet?
Calm. Small town. But we do like walk able downtown. Doesn't have to be crazy. But being near a movie theater and a few things would be preferable. We don't drink or do clubs or anything.

What do you want to be closest to?
Work
Shopping
Basic services (supermarket, drugstore, etc.)
Nightlife
Train or subway stations

Do you want to live with people of a similar age, race, religion or sexual preference or do you prefer a diverse neighborhood?
Doesn't matter as long as crime isn't out of control.

Favorite Beverage - Craft Beer, wine, water?
Water

You live 90 minutes from West Chester. You have a car. Take a few day trips down to West Chester and check out the area for yourselves.

Chester County Hospital is in West Chester. It's now owned by University of Pennsylvania, and growing by leaps and bounds. There are several other hospitals within a half-hour drive of downtown West Chester.

I live close to you now and have lived in the area that you are thinking of moving to. In fact, I had a child at Chester County Hospital in West Chester. I would never recommend someone move to the Delaware Valley area from the Lehigh Valley unless you are fond of more traffic and paying higher prices. Don't get me wrong, West Chester and Chester county are really nice places to live, but they're expensive. You know the reputation that Lehigh has for frats and parties - West Chester has a similar reputation and you would be living among them. But if that's what's going to happen... Here's a list of 10 hospitals in the area: https://www.yelp.com/search?cflt=hos...e+County%2C+PA

Well, apparently we are 1hr 30 min away. My husband doesn't want to drive that. I know we can go drive down there, but that really isn't going to tell us how to find a town to rent in if we moved or what hospitals there are.

I wouldn't really want to live IN West Chester. As long as work is 30min away or less, we would do that. But I don't know any hospitals down there and where their located.

There doesn't seem to be any places to rent under $1200.

You will be extremely limited in the desirable Philadelphia suburbs with that budget.

You don't have to live in the borough of West Chester to be close to the university and/or Chester County Hospital. Check out the link below: the borough is directly adjacent to townships that offer suburban living and good schools.

Chester County Pennsylvania Township Maps

You should also consider Paoli Hospital. It has a very good reputation, and is the County's trauma center. If you were to get a job there, I would recommend finding a home east of West Chester borough, as the hospital is located in either Willistown or the southwestern part of Tredyffrin (sorry, not sure which township).

How come when I look at the median income it says around 45,000? Yet, the median home value is 350,000? People with an income of 45k can't afford a 300k house I don't think.
