Considering how most of these guys drive and how so many are operating illegally, I have zero sympathy. I feel bad for the other driver.

It's a major safety issue for the city.

Are they legal or are they not? I would think, at the very least, they should have a license plate. I don't actually care if someone rides one or not. If you go to Europe, people are riding scooters/mopeds all over the place. The difference is that they don't ride in huge groups like gangs. That's when I have an issue with it. Although, drivers are crazy (there are just less of them per capita).

The noise is the other issue I have. Why can people ride Harley's and dirt bikes at absolute ridiculous levels of noise? This is something unique to America IME.

I commute by motorcycle but I would dare not ride a motorcycle in Philly or on the major thoroughfares. The combined nature of the outdated road design in the area, the potholed roads, the heavy amount of traffic and crazy drivers make a lethal mix of hazards for motorcyclists. It doesn't help that some bikers also have no regard for traffic rules.

These bikers are doing more than simply riding in groups. Unlike moped drivers in Europe, they are blatantly running red lights and weaving through traffic. Some have outfitted their bikes with music systems that rival police and fire sirens. I don’t know whether the police are uninterested or incapable of stopping them. There was another death of a biker popping wheelies on the parkway last year, IIRC. More deaths are sure to occur.

As if that’s not enough, there are bands of young kids on bicycles who similarly disobey traffic laws and actually ride the wrong way through oncoming traffic on city streets. It’s only a matter of time before one of them becomes injured or killed, as well.

We can expect an uptick of this behavior now that spring has arrived. It creates a certain sense of lawlessness that the city should stop ignoring. It’s not going away simply through natural selection.

There’s little information in that OP article to allow one to jump to the conclusion he was irresponsible and deserved what happened. This article paints something of a different picture, an electrician and mechanic with a penchant for motorbikes. Sounds like his “garage” was almost a museum. Check out the bikes if one has an interest in that sort of thing.

Well said, as usual. I love spring, but loathe this part of it. Up in Mt. Airy, I heard a dirt bike with a loud music system, as you mentioned. Such ignorance is so widespread.

The Stacey Clark in the article is completely different to the one who was killed in the accident. The former is white dude

I'm sure Mayor Kenney is working very hard to figure out a possible way to potentially solve this problem.

Haha.

Soon both the homeless in Suburban Station and the dirt bike gangs will be but a memory.
