The rest of the world is plenty nuts lol, I'm in Jacksonville for work right now and the downtown is literally deserted besides homeless people. I was out some bars in a nearby neighborhood last night and I felt far more unsafe than I do in somewhere like Fishtown or Center City.

Just had to respond because I was in Jacksonville lately and thought the EXACT same thing. Talk about a decrypted, decaying downtown! That place was awful. And I can't even count how many times I was nearly run over just trying to cross the street legally. Truly a backwards place.

I'm sure it will be loads o' fun watching masked waiters escorting people to their tables and then they rip off the masks and have a boisterous time!
You live in Maryland? In that case, your maskless days are probably numbered.

Refusing to patronize business with self-imposed mask mandates is your choice. There’s a lovely fish market down the street from me that has maintained mask mandates throughout the pandemic. I still went in during the periods I was comfortable going into other public indoor spaces sans masks. It’s a very tight space, and maybe some of the staff have one or more risk factors.

It's pretty sad, but at least we've got good walkable bones.
Philadelphia definitely isn’t weirdly left. I wouldn’t describe prevailing Democratic leadership as conservative, but prevailing machine politics can have change-resistant effects.

Who sees the city as one giant suburb? I won’t deny there are factions in the city with those attitudes, but I don’t think it’s the predominant attitude today. Or maybe I’ve lived outside the city for too long. *Shrugs*

Conservatives bought up Florida and Maryland after a moderator politely told people to keep the thread Philly specific. If they can’t follow a simple rule on a message board how will the instil law and order?

I popped into the Philadelphia thread because of the new Philadelphia mask edict, which is causing a stir in places far away. If that is not Philadelphia specific then I don't know what it is. Philadelphia can be a fun and enjoyable city for the right people in the right place and if you'd check my posting history I even recommended it over Baltimore to an Irish couple looking for a few months' base in the US.

As it is, as a former resident, I'm glad I'm not paying the wage tax.

I'm also glad I don't have your DA and your crime and your progressive-left politics that does nothing about crime or inequity except, somehow, make it even worse.

I'm glad I don't have your mayor.

My Baltimore suburb is hardly a hotbed of right wing politics. But it is orderly, clean, and governed by sane (blue) politicians.

Now you’re mentioning Baltimore…

Habitual rule breaker.

How can I trust you or your party to “maintain law and order” if you’re having trouble following 1 measly rule on a message board?

My knowledge of Baltimore suburbs is based on the John Waters classic Polyester. It was an entirely judgemental and hypocritical society. Maybe it has changed since 1981, who knows.

I agree with aspects of your statement, as I've been fed up with the machine politics in Philadelphia for years, and this latest stunt is a perfect example of that. But I am also realistic in that Philadelphia is not alone in crappy politics (right or left), and the city will continue it's recovery in spite of City Hall.
The fact that there is population growth and demand for housing speaks for itself.

The post was Philly specific, despite the fact that it referenced another city. You're invoking politics into the thread and acting as if your hands are clean. Please.

We kept a mask requirement in place at the Pen & Pencil Club for about six months after we reopened following a roughly 18-month shutdown for the pandemic and repairs to our main bar. whose ceiling fell in during the shutdown.

I argued in February, a few months after the city lifted its mandate, that we should drop ours as well, and my fellow Board of Governors members agreed; one of them said that the mask-wearing was "performative."

As I'm sure you know now, I still think this is the case, but I will mask up when going to the P&P or any of the other watering holes I frequent come Monday.

And I'm used to seeing performative gestures on the part of our current Mayor, who's an old-school racketeer-turned-progressive virtue signaler. I have said in the past that Philadelphia politics are rivaled for corruption and chicanery only by Chicago's, and the Michael Nutter years were IMO merely an interregnum. I'd characterize the city today as bifurcated: On one side, you have the old-line machine Democrats, generally center-left, who mainly don't want things to change too much, especially if the change endangers their favored friends, and on the other, you have a rising progressive-left faction that would like to take the city in a social-democratic direction. (Krasner is not in with the whole of this program; he mainly has a beef with the cops, and that animates his views.) Mayor Kenney does the performative progressive-left act while not entirely signing onto the progressive-left program.

And I do believe that our City Council President, Darrell "I drive to the corner store" Clarke, does envision the city as a giant suburb. The trouble is, it's not built that way.
