Hi. My husband is thinking of accepting a job in Phoenix. We are looking to be in an apartment for the first 6 months until we learn more about the area. I would be really grateful if anyone can tell me what are the "good areas" and the places we need to avoid. We have a 2 year old daughter, so we want to be in a nice area. Thanks.

Knowing where your husband will be working will be very helpful, Phoenix is a very large city, there are good and bad areas everywhere so that would really depend on his work location.

The basic areas you want to avoid are South Phoenix, Guadalupe, some of Central Phoenix, some of the West Valley, it goes on and on.

Surprise is nice, family oriented, low crime, good schools. Smaller phoenix area town with all the amenities so you can avoid shopping in the "big city" with all its traffic. One theatre. Quiet and clean.

And also very expensive for the average family.

Very true, many take Bell Road to get to Surprise, and we all know how fun of a commute that is, especially when you get near the Sun City area.

I'm not sure yet which hospital he will be working in. I was looking at some houses in Maricopa. They are very inexpensive and look nice, but I don't know anything about the area. How far is that from Phoenix? What about Casa Grande, Coolidge or Florence? We live in a very rural area now, so he is used to driving 40 minutes to work. However, we will be in an apartment for the first 6 months or so. I was trying to go by zip code, but there are so many zip codes out there.

You would be looking at least an hour into phoenix during normal commute times from these areas, not a good idea.
