Hi everyone,

I just got offered a promotion that would take me from Southern CA/Orange County area to Phx. The office is in downtown Phx (Central Ave/N. third street area).

We want to buy a pool home under $500K. We want to live in a safe, semi-suburban area close to lots of restaurants, shops and fun things to do.

I'll be 38 and my husband's 41. We don't have any kids to consider. Can you give me an idea what areas might meet our needs?

Thank you!

Try Desert Ridge or Kierland areas. Would be a doable commute to downtown. You should be able to find something in your budget. Tons of restaurants, shops and so forth. Congratulations on the promotion!

My Husband is 39 and I am 35, we also have no children. We live in North Scottsdale and love it here. You should come down and look around and see what seems right to you. As soon as we got into Scottsdale we knew it was our spot.

I would second Katimae's recommendation. Scottsdale's a great place for DINKys. Some might suggest closer to downtown, but unless you have a thing for the historic neighborhoods, and are willing to put up with a little surrounding neighborhood blight for the experience, look into the NE area of the valley.

You may also want to check the north central Phx area between 7th ave and 7th street between Camelback and Northern. Close to downtown and definitly some nice mature areas.

OP-

Also remember that you may not need to spend anywhere near 500K here to get what you want, even in those areas mentioned. Even with the SoCal (you said you are from Orange County) drop in prices - it is still MUCH less expensive for housing here. Of course you can spend 500K if you want...you ll just get a ton more house.

Me personally - I might think of spending 350-400 and still getting a very nice place and banking some of that other money!

When we were looking for a place we were told by a friend to try to stay north of Indian Bend Rd and East of Scottsdale Rd. I think that was good advice.
