My dogs and I went swimming in the canals and irrigation ditch's all the time out west. I still swim in them. Was swimming in the CAP 2 weeks ago as a matter of fact. The CAP runs off of the Colorado, so it is relatively safe.

The water comes fresh out of the Parker Dam. It pipes down, and the Harquahala ditch is the first branch off the CAP. Still fresh, still cold, as it runs underground a few times.

How about trying the Verde River? Take a day trip and go either up to Camp Verde, between Horseshoe and Bartlett Lake, or out east of Fountain Hills off the Beeline Highway.
