I've lived here since 1979 and don't recall anyone calling a dust storm a haboob until the last couple of years. Is this a trendy thing or did I just miss out?

I dont think it's a trendy thing, I think it's more of people becoming educated to what the proper name actually is.

I took some pictures as it was incoming. I'm in town for the week and took some pictures from my house. All I had available was a monopod, so some of these might be blurry because the lighting was limited.

Seems it is cuz I never heard anyone call it that until posted here. Anyway, these are not uncommon and small ones happen every year and monster ones happen every few years. I suspect cuz its an early storm in the season before the rains harden the loose dirt.

I live in northwest Phoenix and I didn't see much of that big wall of dust probably because the storm diminished as it moved through the Phoenix area. There was wind and some dust in the area I live in, but not that much. There was also a lot of rain around 10:00 PM or so.

I saw many of the pictures people took of the dust storm; I'm a native of Phoenix and I've never seen a dust storm that massive before.

I was in Chandler buying my coconuts at Lee Lees and I saw it coming as I was getting in my car in the parking lot. By the time I got onto Chandler Bl it was there and it took me about 45 minutes to get home (4 or 5 miles away). Crazy people were driving without lights (I guess they didn't know) and so many trees down in the roads added to the visibility fo about 3 feet made it rough. Ended up pulling over at the mall for a while becuase I literally could not see in front of me. Of course, there were nutso people driving full speed cutting people off. Worst part was that it was so dark I couldn't see the tree limbs in the road until I was almost right on top of them.

It was kind of cool though. I have been here 10 years and never seen that

That was an interesting storm! Great pics that have been posted. Thanks for sharing! We just have a layer of red dust on everything. The $3 car wash was definitely the busiest place in town today! lol

From what I understand the mesocyclonic system eventually crossed into CA and was still dropping dust / mud. That was according to the NWS this AM.
