This may sound crazy, but my cleaning lady will not work in any house that is over 75. She said that she gets sick working in that heat. She does a lot of stuff on her hands and knees. She cleans the old fashioned way. She has to turn customers away because she is in such a demand, so if a customer refuses to keep it cool..she drops them. I can't blame her, I wouldn't want to be sweating like a horse either just so someone can have the temperature turned up. Of course, setting the thermostat temperature is a personal decision we all make. So I don't mean to imply that one person is right or wrong.

My house is a freak of nature and feels much cooler than the actual temperature. I keep it 85 during the day and 81 at night (but I have to sleep under a blanket - which I like.) 709 sq. feet, hardwood floors, 4 ceiling fans and a continuous circular air flow (every room opens into the next). No one ever gets hot in my house.

I keep mine at 80-85 when I am gone for an extended period of time.

During the day, I keep it around 80, then it gets too hot so I drop it to 75. Then put it backup to 80 if I get cold!

I love it freezing at night! In the winter on really cold nights (gosh I love those) I sleep with the window open! In the summer, I put it at 68 and not a degree higher.

Does anyone know a legal definition of reasonable temperature? I lived in a shared, separately- leased 2 br apartment and the housemate keeps the AC at 65, with the fan on continuously. It has made me sick, and the management company refuses to do anything about it.

I'm not sure there's any such definition. Individual preferences for thermostat settings vary. I don't know what you expect the management company to do, even if you have medical documentation, they don't have to allow you to break your lease. In the meantime, close the register in your bedroom, and dress warmly in other parts of the apartment. Have you discussed this with your roommate? That thermostat setting will change before long, if you and your roommate are paying the bill.

That is the definition. What is a reasonable temperature to the ordinary and reasonable/prudent person? I doubt your problem is one that would have any effect, in fact, that sort of standard is used for slumlords who refuse to fix air conditioners.

It would take some compelling evidence to convince anybody that 65 is unreasonable as room temperature is supposed to be around 72-78.

There are ways to break a lease at minimal costs, but I'm gonna be blunt, Arizona is not kind to tenants in the landlord-tenant relationship.
