Hello,

I will be relocating to Phoenix in mid-February for a new job (leaving financial services industry; got tired of the crazy!) and would like to get back to trail running before work. A friend and future co-worker has recommended that I move to the North Phoenix area around the 101 and 51. My new job will be near Indian Rd and 51. I'd prefer an apartment/town home that's close (<0.5mi) to a trail head where I can go for a morning or afternoon run on my own or with my boxer. Any suggestions would be appreciated. I'm enjoying learning more about Phoenix on this forum.

thanks in advance,

-John

Much fun.

I don't know how the apartments/townhomes are (the area is good), but there are some very close to Shea/SR-51 that would put you very close to the Phoenix Mountain Preserve. Tons of trails in there - Trail 100 stretches 11 miles (with no street crossings) and is very popular with trail runners.

Also, an apartment near Shea/Tatum would put you close to the Tatum trailhead and is a better area. Happy hunting.

you can also look for a place to live near one of the canals that crisscross the valley....running on the banks of them is very popular....

Piestewa (Squaw) Peak trail is popular, but not really good for running...there are trails in the surrounding park that would work, though.....

Check these places:

Official Site of the City of Phoenix - Locations

Piestewa is the closest to where you will work. From there North Mountain, Shaw Butte, Lookout Mountain are pretty close. If you're willing to commute further check out South Mountain.

Please remember to be cautious during the summer hikes with your dog. Overheating is especially common with brachycephalic (flat nose) breeds like boxers.

Welcome to Phoenix!

Another option would be somewhere near South Mountain. Tons of trails for running, hiking or biking! There are lots of apartments in the area, too.

There are a bunch of trails that can be accessed from Thunderbird, 7th Street or the intersection of 7th Avenue & Peoria. When I lived in Phoenix that's where I did all of my trail running.

Squaw Peak is okay but it's a real pain to park there in the morning.

I'm guessing that's Indian School and the 51/Squaw Peak.
