Agreed. A provincial Jersey attitude is not well suited for life in Scottsdale.

I grew up 20 miles from the Jersey Border in Orange County NY. There was Action Park in Vernon,NJ and polluted beaches. I missed a friend's wedding in 1989 because of a weekend in Seaside Heights. That was the summer of the hypodermic needles and raw sewage on the beaches. Saw soiled toilet paper in the ocean and initial felt fine. I love the water and rode the waves for hours. I was sick for a whole week on the toilet starting the next day. I have no positive memories of Jersey. Bunch of manufacturing towns and overpriced bedroom communities to NYC in the north. Dirty ghetto towns like Trenton and Camden adjacent to Philly. Atlantic City is crap and has been since the 70's. Get a block away from the Boardwalk and casino's, looks like Camden.

Now back to Scottsdale. I don't think the costs of home ownership justify the amenities. To me, Fountain Hills has way more nature at its doorstep than Scottsdale. Negative on FH is no lights so traveling around after dark isn't all that much fun. Even on Shea. Regardless, FH has more nature and access to boating, kayaking, firing ranges and hiking.

As I stated, plenty of parts of Tempe,Chandler and Mesa have nicer areas than Southern Scottsdale in particular. I kind of view Scottsdale as sterile. Tempe atleast has more cultural diversity with the university influence and is more Libertarian in feel than other parts of the valley like Gilbert. Fashion Square is overrated too. I prefer Arizona Mills and its easy access. The three stories of Fashion is very annoying in finding locations of stores. The food court is a joke. $9 for two slices and a drink at Sbarro's? Yet, you go down Camelback and have Joe's and Gus's NY Style for $5 for two. Sorry, Scottsdale is overrated !

Hello everyone I am new to the forum I lived in Va for most of my life then moved out to Vegas for 11 yr's. I had a chance to visit Scottsdale for some length of time. I lovvvvvvved it right now I am out in Omaha and trying to decide if I want to go back to Vegas or move to Scottsdale it is a tough choice. Scottsdale is rich with activities I loved the food, friendly people, the malls, and where I was I could look out and see the Phoenix skyline oh my what a site.

So I have no clue as to what this person is talking about Omaha is not even as crazy as he makes Scottsdale sound.

Like I said, there's plenty of rentals in Scottsdale for under $1000/month. The "exclusiveness" is North Scottsdale which is a hike for anyone that works anywhere out of Scottsdale when you factor in the traffic on the 101 and 202 between 8-5. I work early so shooting up to Scottsdale on the 101 isn't too bad. However, after 4PM, brutal and I dealt with NYC traffic too. It's not the gridlock as much as "defensive driving." People don't use signals and you are on edge when changing lanes. Longtime residents I work with take side roads and avoid the 101 altogether. Personally, the best way to get to places like Tempe or Chandler is take the 101 to Rio Salado or Broadway and go down the Price arterial.

I think you should strongly consider places such as Tempe or Chandler that have similar amenities to Scottsdale without the cost for a Scottsdale address. Good luck !

The stereotype view that Scottsdale has seems to stem from the days when real estate was booming and money (interest) was cheap. Many people came here to buy cheap property, and flaunt their new found wealth. The reality today is that most of those people are either bankrupt or left for the next cheap real estate mecca. I live in Scottsdale, and have for 12 years. Its a much better place today than it ever was. More serious, more focused.

Sun City: #1 in dental implants
Sin City: #1 in breast implants
Scottsdale: #2 in both.

I have been to Scottsdale multiple times and from what I experienced was everything was the same, no character, awful food, and the people focused on material status. They unsuccessfully seek to copy my part of the country but can't because we have better schools, lower crime rates, and far superior culture and food.

I'm curious what makes you think anyone in Scottsdale is trying to copy New Jersey. NJ is more considered a joke out here. I've spent a lot of time in NJ, and I know a lot of is lovely and cultured. But out here people think it's all the turnpike lined with pharmaceutical plants and people with 'names' like Snookie and The Situation, and Tony Soprano.

This is not the appropriate forum to compare New Jersey with Scottsdale (that would be the City vs. City forum). The o/p has had an opportunity to share his opinion, and receive feedback from people who actually live here. Thread closed.
