Sadly, it happens. There is at least one story of a dog getting snatched off of a leash, albeit one of those long retractable ones.

I saw a pack of 5 or 6 coyotes as I was driving on Deer Valley Road the other night (the 2 lane part east of Cave Creek). I have also heard them in my neighborhood recently.

My Facebook status the other night... "I just heard a coyote behind my house, and I don't mean an NHL player."

We have plenty of coyotes here in Sun City. Of course the coyotes here are mostly retired but they do pick off a poodle now and then. Neighbor wanted to adopt a little rescue dog and the rescue people insisted on her building a mall attached kennel/run to her house. They walk the block walls, hide in the shrubs in yards here just waiting. Keep your dogs close and on a leash if possible when letting them out at night.

Sun City has more coyotes than I think I have seen anywhere. We almost always see one just walking down the green strips when visiting Grandma.

It probalby depends on where you live. I've had 2 run through my yard in the last few weeks. We have a small dog and she "chased" a coyote out of the yard. Lucky she didnt catch it as the coyotes just take the little dogs and run away.

Personally, I seem to see coyotes all over. We have seen several on golf courses in Surprise. Very common.

Basically, if you have a small dog, keep an eye on it at all times. Thats just the way it is as far as Im concerned. We deal with it.

I've seen a few coyotes in our Sun City neighborhood, already. We've only been here 2 months. Once on the greenbelt, in front of our house and twice crossing our yard. He crossed our yard & came to the street, in front, looked both ways for traffic, then crossed the road. They are smart! Once we were out in our golf car and seen one trotting down the street. They seem more like stray dogs. Very much at home in the city. :-)

My neighbor had one in their yard night before last. Wife opened the back door and started yelling at it and it just sauntered around the yard not even the least bit concerned then went over and jumped the 6 1/2 ft privacy wall and walked off.
In my opinion once it's in my yard extreme protection measures will go into effect so it won't happen twice (from the same coyote).
