Hi, I am a single mom with an 8 yr old boy looking to rent a nice home. I found a beautiful home in a beautiful neighborhood surrounded by similar large well kept newer homes. The neighborhood is off of 75th Ave and Elwood, just south of Lower Buckeye Rd. When I first came to the neighborhood, it was one of the nicest I had seen and the house was PERFECT! As I have been talking to people, I have been hearing that perhaps this neighborhood isn't as safe as it appears. I was wondering if there was anyone on this board that lives in the area? I crime mapped it and I have that data, I am looking to hear from someone that actually lives there and what there experience is. I guess I am just looking to feel like it would be okay for my son to play outside without worrying about shootings or crazy things like that.

My husband works out there. A couple of his fellow employees live out there with no problem, but that area has a cow poop smell, if you can handle it.
Close to a dairy farm.

I worked as a Substitute at Santa Maria Middle School. It was absolutely horrible.

That kind of post ("it was absolutely horrible") really doesn't answer the OP's question. But, I note that the school has a good rating on greatschools, from people who may know it a bit better than you do.

EDIT: Actually, the reviews are a mixed bag.

Neither did you, however, the school I mentioned is ABOUT 80 YARDS FROM THE ADDRESS IN THE OP. Might be useful info., as she has an 8 yo.
Great schools shows the test scores significantly below State Average on AIMS Math, Reading, and Science. It's not a good State to be below average in.....

I'm just saying you should give some details about your experience, rather than just saying the school was "horrible". I don't think you were referring to test scores. I'm not surprised that the scores are low out there. The schools are something to think about, though the OP's child wouldn't be in this particular school for a few years.

For all we know, she may be planning on home schooling, though!

I believe the closest elementary school is Tuscano Elementary which has a greatschools rating of 5. This in my opinion will show you how well the neighborhood is and in my opinion is not that great. It is not horrible but not that good either. Here is some more information:

Hispanic76% White12% Black6% Asian5% Unspecified1%

Also, 67% of the kids are on free or reduced lunch.

Hope this helps you with your decision. Good luck with your move.
