Im not sure Id have the stomach to do that....they after all tried to bilk the young man for 200 dollars...which I would be VERY suspicious of. Once they were asked for a receipt for the 200 dollars asking for exactly were it was going...they caved. Tells me it might not have been legit. I would move as soon as I could.

I completely understand your point, and do agree.

The reason for my suggesting to keep in contact is that they will remember him in two ways. One is that he is a friendly guy, and it becomes not so easy to stiff someone that you know and see a lot. The other is that they also remember that he is no pushover, therefore, less likely to try and stiff him again.

It's really a matter of using a strategy to prevent a recurrence of that unpleasant experience.

I once lived in a real nice place with excellent and responsive maintenance.
On move out, they wanted an extra $550 from thin air too, when you nicely challenge them they caved too as if to say "well, we gave it the ol college try."

Thanks for the story and everyone's input. We lived in a single family home rental for years in the valley while waiting out the housing bubble. We had a great relationship with our landlords. I am somewhat astonished to see that within apartment complexes they seem to stifle tenants at the first opportunity. Is this a common practice? Also, are these complexes confronted with a lot of rent write-offs and other problems so they overreact like we've seen in this case?
Thanks, P.L.

That's why I rent from individuals. No hassles, although I haven't been late on my rent, I know that if there is a problem, my landlord would work with me, not against me.

I just want to know if the manager is able to tell you that there is no grace period and you have to pay on the 1st of the month each month
