What's with the job postings lately where the employer is asking for only applicants within 20 minutes/5 miles/etc of their office? Why does it matter to them where I live in the metro? It's my responsibility to get myself to work on time no matter where I live. Is this a valid concern of employers in Phoenix, or just another dumb way for employers to screen out candidates, period?

Could be it would be less likely that you may get stuck in rush hour traffic due to an accident on the freeway etc. While it is your responsibility to make sure you are on time, sometimes there are things that happen out of your control, and they probably want to minimize those as much as possible.

What surprises me is that I'm seeing these on job postings for professional/experience required jobs - not just on the the low end or retail stuff. I wonder if the employers realize what impression that gives the potential employee? Especially for a professional/experience and or degree required job. Not a good one, I'll say that.

Well where at in town s this employer located? You might not be satisfied with neighborhoods and school districts within 20 minutes or a few miles away....

Makes sense to me considering the employer is "signing" the paycheck.

Simple solution, if the requirements appear unreasonable . . . don't apply.

The only time I've ever heard of this occurring is if it's an "on-call" type position and you need to be there quickly when they need you.

True.....like RN's and other medical staff. Firefighters and police officers also typically live relatively close to their stations.

Definitely on call jobs. I've filtered out people based on that before, but in reality, I've not paid any attention to where they lived for the right candidate either. FWIW.

It is not uncommon for employers to only consider qualified candidates with a certain mile range. Many time job candidates (especially those not familiar with a new city) will over estimate their commute tolerance - especially if childcare is thrown into the mix. It is not unusual for employers to require "road warriors" to live near a major airport or hub.

Same difference.

I've lived all over this country from Washington, DC, to Washington State and I've never encountered it before. I've never even had an interview where anyone asked me that, let alone seen a job posting that required it except for the already-mentioned government or hospital positions where it was an issue. Employers won't be happy until they can get robots to do all their jobs.
