When I was in high school and my mom was teaching school, we'd go to breakfast there sometimes on the way to school/work. It was really good... I remember the pancakes, too! I seem to remember being in Guggy's more for dinner, or lunch if we were shopping.

Back before brunch was popular, the Safari had a great Sunday buffet. All the dietary monstrosities one could eat. As a growing pre-teen with a seemingly bottomless stomach, it was nirvana. My paternal grandparents lived three or four blocks away and would take my family there for special occasions.
You're definitely correct about the coffee shop, it certainly DID have excellent pancakes, with boysenberry ("poisonberry" to my sister) syrup at the tables.

I don't know how she did it, but my grandmother got me and my sister two advance tickets to "Empire Strikes Back" on 23 May 1980, a couple days after it opened. (Some kid at the YMCA where I worked spoiled it slightly, "Yeah, Darth Vader is Luke's FATHER!"). The line was huge, probably three showings long, but we went right on up to the doors and in. No megaplex with a tiny screen and lousy sound, the Cine' Capri was all about quality.

The Swedish pancakes were another favorite of mine. I thought it was awful when Paul Shank's contract ran out and he moved up to the Hilton; I noted that they kept all of his cooks and menu though.

So that is the new building. Never saw it before. I looks like it was built on the site of the old girls gym and field. I guess they went coed in the boys gym, they had lockers and showers on opposite sides when I went there.
