1975/1976 ish

If one wishes to check out some old Phoenix Gazette issues, 6/21-6/30/77, Google has them online. I encourage checking the movie section for past showings. Interesting to say the least.

When I was in high school and my mom was teaching school, we'd go to breakfast there sometimes on the way to school/work. It was really good... I remember the pancakes, too! I seem to remember being in Guggy's more for dinner, or lunch if we were shopping.

Back before brunch was popular, the Safari had a great Sunday buffet. All the dietary monstrosities one could eat. As a growing pre-teen with a seemingly bottomless stomach, it was nirvana. My paternal grandparents lived three or four blocks away and would take my family there for special occasions.

You're definitely correct about the coffee shop, it certainly DID have excellent pancakes, with boysenberry ("poisonberry" to my sister) syrup at the tables.

I don't know how she did it, but my grandmother got me and my sister two advance tickets to "Empire Strikes Back" on 23 May 1980, a couple days after it opened. (Some kid at the YMCA where I worked spoiled it slightly, "Yeah, Darth Vader is Luke's FATHER!"). The line was huge, probably three showings long, but we went right on up to the doors and in. No megaplex with a tiny screen and lousy sound, the Cine' Capri was all about quality.

Not only does that site have some great pictures of the Safari, including the flood in the early 70s, but also some great menu pictures. Notice here in particular Monti's La Casa Vieja.

The Swedish pancakes were another favorite of mine. I thought it was awful when Paul Shank's contract ran out and he moved up to the Hilton; I noted that they kept all of his cooks and menu though.

So that is the new building. Never saw it before. I looks like it was built on the site of the old girls gym and field. I guess they went coed in the boys gym, they had lockers and showers on opposite sides when I went there.

Here's a great link for the Safari fans, from 1997, when it looked like the Safari would soon be no more.

I found an article at Google News Archive Search about Nelson's Swimming Pool turning in to Hunt's Fishing Pond. (6/30/77 page 14 of 103).
Thanks for the link desertskies

Here is a poor screen snap shot of the article. How do you remember Phoenix? Stories from long time residents...-nelsons-pool-article-6-30-77.jpg

I forgot all about it turning in to a fish pond.

Does anyone remember the actual date Nelson's Pool closed for swimming?
