I have been there and got hot dog and the hamburgers. They are pretty good and it's all new to me since I am not from Illinois.
I guess I grew up with Nathan's being the big hot dog place in the Northeast. I'd say they are good competitors

Chicago-style hot dogs are often served on steamed buns, as is the case with Portillo's. That would account for the sogginess.

I went to the Tempe location today and ordered the Polish sausage with fries. I thought it was pretty good, but nothing spectacular. I'd go again, but I wouldn't wait in line for it. The bun was definitely soggy.

Finally went to Portillos this weekend at Tempe Marketplace and wow this place is so overrated. Got the Italian beef, onion rings, and chic cake shake. The Italian beef was so bland and the bread so soggy. The onion rings I asked if they had some dipping sauce and they look at me like I was an alien. They were nothing special. And the shake was good nothing to write home about. The place was full of annoying chicagoians. Gotta say Chicago food is so overrated.

Sounds like someone isn't apt to like anything with a Chicago name on it, since he/she identifies Chicagoans as "annoying" anyway. Not sure why they would bother to even go there with that attitude. I tend NOT to go places that I find irritating for one reason or another.

Right, as if your opinion hadn't already been formed long before you stepped foot in the place.

If you don't want your Italian beef bread soggy, tell them not to dip it next time.

Nope I went in with an open mind hoping it was good. The last thing I want to do is waste money on sub par food. Also, I didn't get the Italian beef dipped and it wasn't a yummy flavorful soggy it was nasty water soggy.

You messed up by going to the Tempe location, should try the Scotttsdale one, it has much better ratings on Yelp and that's the one I went though, I thought it was very very good and I've never had an Italian beef before, first experience with it.
