Hello!

I am relocating to the Phoenix area from Florida for my first job. I'm looking at housing options and was interested in knowing how safe the area near W. University Dr. and Hardy Rd is in Tempe. I liked Tempe because of the amount of trees and the amount of people walking around. The office would be near the airport so the commute won't be too long according to Google Maps.

Any comments about the safety of the area would be greatly appreciated!

Thanks in advance.

It's an okay area, lots of students around there; I don't know if that is what you want. Apartments are generally older. Not convenient for grocery shopping and such, but it's not a long drive to one either.

I agree the area is nice and walkable and bike friendly but the immediate area is very populated with students and depending on your tolerance level that may or may not get old very quickly. It's still very close to the airport and the commute will be a cake walk.

That neighborhood to the north is pretty run down but if you stay closer to University it should be okay. North of 5th St is where it gets kind of sketchy. There are some really nice condos along 5th St so it is kind of deceiving but for the most part the neighborhood is not as nice as those places make it look. That teenage girl that disappeared last summer was last seen in that neighborhood and they found her car there and as far as I know no one has found who killed her. Hard to say if it was someone that knew her or if she was taken by a stranger.

Of course stories like the one you mentioned are unfortunate but nonetheless it could have happened any where and you can't live your life in a plastic bubble. OP please don't be scared off the area is far from dangerous you'll be fine.

Thanks for all the comments! I completely understand stories like that can happen anywhere so I'm not put off by it. I just don't want to live somewhere where I'll be constantly fearing being mugged while on a run, or having my place broken into while away at work or travel. As for the students aspects, I graduated a week ago, and granted I was never a partier, it's nice to be around people of similar age and be able to walk or bike to coffee shops and restaurants.

One thing though, I saw the commute time is short on Google maps during non-rush hours. How is the commute during rush hour to and from the airport?

It's not going to be that different. Straight down University to the 143, then to the airport/airport area.

The airport is literally 10 min from the area your looking at. Taking surface streets you won't run into any serious rush hour traffic and it shouldn't take you longer than 15min tops to get to work. Now if you decide to hop on the 202 from Priest And get to the airport that way then yes you'll run into a little bit of traffic but there's no reason to hop on the freeway.

I agree that's the best and easiest route.

Hey just noting what I have observed about that neighborhood. As a female I wouldn't be comfortable walking down 5th St or anywhere north of there late at night. If it were me I would be looking in the neighborhood south of University.
