I will be relocating to the area in the next six months and am looking for a nice apartment complex that will accept an American Bulldog that is around 65 to 70lbs. I am relocating for work and want an apartment rather than a house because of the low move in costs. Are there any options? I've been searching and finding that bully breeds are restricted in all the apartments I've found that will take a big dog. She's extremely well behaved, but I read on another post that proof of obedience class helps. I'm willing to do whatever I need to do and appreciate any help you can give. Thanks!

In Arizona we have apartment locators that are paid by the apartment complexes to match up tenants with available apartments and all fees are paid by the apartment management companies, They have lists of all the credit scores, pet requirements that apartments will accept and can save you a bundle in application fees.
I used to work as an apartment locator, it is a legit business that requires a realtor license.

There are not a lot of apartments that accept restricted breeds but there are some.

If you want a private condo use Craigslist and if you get lucky be prepared to jump on anything that is good because it will not last.

Have you actually looked at houses? Rents are comparable between small houses and apartments. You might even get the benefit of a yard for the dog. Move in costs can be cheaper for apartments only because we are now getting closer to the summer so they all have move-in specials. But house owners give summer specials too. In 6 months the specials will be pretty much over though and rents will increase. Do however as suggested try apartment locators. There is no finder's fee charged to you, the renter.

Best of luck. I know how you feel. I had a pit bull, luckily I could get away with the good ol' lab mix story. Find a vet, they ask what breed, make one up thats not usually banned, hand the paper from the vet to the manager, bah bam. Gotta do what you gotta do.

You've received some good advice here. I might have been the one discussing obedience training on another thread. If so, it's not obedience training that I was suggesting - it's passing the AKC Canine Good Citizen test. We've used a scanned copy of Riley's passing grade to get us into housing that was not pet friendly several times (private rentals, house exchanges, hotels, etc.)

not in Arizona - we're very landlord-friendly, and lying on your app can get you bounced out on the street in a heartbeat. AZ is not like NY or LA where it takes a year to do evictions..

Most people have no idea what an American Bulldog is. Heck I only do because my uncle had one. In Cali thats the only way to rent with a Rottweiler are any other breed deemed "aggressive". IMO its in how your raise your dog. I strongly encourage the lab mix trick. Since American Bulldog isn't recognized by the AKC I don't think it would ever be an issue.

I may be mistaken, but if memory serves, Zippy is a landlord. If I'm wrong, he/she is VERY knowledgeable about rentals. From both the tenant and the landlord rights.

Everyday people may not know American Bulldogs, but they know what a bulldog or pit bull resembles. I'm NOT justifying the stereotyping, but I DO believe that people 'know' what they believe they should be afraid of. (please note the italics. I don't agree with those feelings, but I'm talking general public beliefs.)

You have the luxury of a lot of free advice on this forum. And usually, you get what you pay for. On this particular topic (i.e. rentals) I'd take Zippyman at his word, and be grateful for the free information.
