and they are not sand storms, as the AZ desert is not made up or sand, but of dirt, hence the name DUST STORM

IMO, the increase of video, live news, and drama surrounding every possible event have increased. Everything else seems to have increased also. In reality, I don't think the frequency of dust storms has increased or decreased. It's just something that happens depending on weather, kind of like tornadoes in other parts of the country. Some years there are a lot, some years very few.

What dust storm? My cell phone was going off all afternoon, but we saw nothing but breezes out my way. Stay out of the SE valley and you will miss out on much of the dust storm activity (the rain too, so it is a trade off). Oh, and just to underscore what others said; there is no sand around here. It is a dust storm - course particulates.

Please, let's not get hung up on the semantic issues. The OP is not concerned about whether they are called haboobs or something else.

Maybe it's because I spend most of my time in the north valley, but we've been here almost two years now and I haven't seen one in person yet.

Not that I'm in any hurry to.....

We aren't usually here in the summer so dust storms aren't something we've experienced - do you bring everything in when a dust storm is looming (cushions etc) or just "weather the storm"?
