Interesting discussion. When I mention Arizona to my friends and family back in the Northeast our politics is usually the first thing they mention. I guess it depends on what part of the country you are from. Friends from the midwest usually mention the better weather (obviously winter!) while friends from the south usually talk about the intense summers we have.

I still think to talk about a general decline of the Phoenix area is absurd. There are problem areas like in all cities and Phoenix will never be as desirable as Silicon Valley but it will continue to grow.

My liberal friends in the Northeast are generally appalled by Arizona, especially if they've never visited. Well, almost everyone's been to the Canyon, but no one considers Phoenix a destination.

When we were still based in Ariz., I was at a party in Boston and someone said to me, "What do you like about Arizona?" I proceeded to list all the things I like about Arizona. He obviously wished he'd never asked.

I was at a repair shop in the Boston area shortly after the Tucson shooting of Gabrielle Giffords et al, and the repair person said (upon seeing the address printed on my check) "Oh, Arizona? Terrible situation." I replied, "Yes, it was horrible." She then said "But it's understandable, given what it's like out there".

To them, it's all about the politics, the guns, and the religion. Just like our President said. I've given up trying to enlighten them. The fact is, if you've never spent time in a place you really have no qualifications to pontificate about it, unless you're extremely well read!

You should have said something like "I know, right, it's like Dorchester or Mattapan."
