I've seen one near Mormon lake while hunting elk. Not really a big deal. I never really thought it was going to attack me. I live in Estrella and there are stories of sightings here. Several stories of them being seen running across road with a coot in their mouth. Elementary school was on lockdown once when principal saw one on campus so I'm pretty sure there is a population in the Estrella Mountains.

Lots of them on the ridge lines of South Mountain's Gila range. Just by pure luck, I saw two of them mating earlier this year.

I read once about an elderly couple walking/hiking somewhere in California I think and a ML attacked the man. The woman jabbed a pen in its eye and stopped the attack. The man went to the hospital. Not sure if he survived but the article said he was 80. I remember thinking - hell if I was 80 I don't think I'd mind being killed and eaten by a mountain lion. There may be a few good years left after 80 for some but mostly its downhill with some sort of nasty medical surprise waiting in the wings. I think I'd rather serve nature somehow than pumped full of chemicals and buried in a cement vault.
Maybe when I'm 80 I'll tie a chicken around my neck and push my wheelchair out into ML territory

And hope the lion gets there before the buzzards do!

I know they live in the outskirts of the valley where we have not driven them out yet, outside of Cave Creek, Carefree, Fountain Hills, West of Peoria, in the Superstitions. I've hiked through there, in Prescott, outside of Flagstaff. I'm pretty sure at least one of them has seen me at sometime, but I haven't seen them. I did look into a deep dark hole in a rock wall once and thought I saw a pair of eyes in the back, decided it may be best not to know at that point and walked away.

Human attacks are really rare, considering how often we go into their territory. They hunt mostly at night, dusk and dawn, and are experts at stealth. I get those thoughts too, but then I realize the dangers of accidently stepping too close to a rattler are much more real(came close one night, whoa). Keep alert always, but don't let it ruin your hike. It's all part of the wild and that's why we're out there.
