Yeah your kind of screwed here. One option would be Payson. It's up in the pines and technically in commutable distance to the valley. I seriously considered Paysdon but I already work so many hours as it is and start so early. I already have to leave my Mesa place between 4:00 and 5:00 am daily. Not sure there's enough time in the day for me personally to do the commute. If I had a regular 40 hour a week job I'd do it in a heartbeat.

I would't consider an hour and half to be a reasonable commute. Maybe if the commute was to somewhere on the far east side, but unlikely a doable commute.

There are people who commute that distance who work in San Francisco and commute from various places around the Central Valley, North, and Southbay.

Doable and reasonable are 2 different things. Commuting from Payson is not reasonable. It is on the other hand doable. There's people that do it every day to enjoy a better place to live.

Some areas of Tempe are shaded with trees and vegetation.

You'll just have to tough it out. It's not that awful and you are hardly alone in your misery. There are 3-4 million other people getting by with the heat as well. If you work in an air conditioned space, you will hardly notice the heat, although that won't stop you from complaining like a roofer about it.

A "sliver" is just about all youll get, and its only a 5-8 degree sliver, so its still hotter than heck. Youd have to look way up at places like Carefree and Cave Creek to get that kind of relief, and its hardly noticeable in the scheme of things.

Gilbert Riperian Preserve is almost 20 degrees cooler than surrounding areas. I use to jog there mornings in July and it really wasn't that bad.
Anywhere near shade or water will be a little cooler.
