A group of 7 of us are flying in from TX in early February, and we'd like to play two rounds of golf (Friday/Saturday).

Looking at tee time prices this far out, most of the ones I've seen are in the $180-$225 range. That's a bit steep for what we're looking for.

What are the best courses for $100 or less? Should I be looking for hotel packages?

That is our High Season. It is really going to be dependent on your desired slope/difficulty. Most of the big courses are going to be in the $150+ range. Have you looked at Munis? Lookout Mountain at the Pointe Tapatio Cliffs is usually pretty reasonable...There are some around, you just aren't going to be playing the Boulders, Wildfire or TPC.

If you want to stay under $100 and play some good courses I would suggest you move away from Scottsdale. For me paying that money I would take a look at Verrado, Estrella, and Southern Dunes. If you want to go a little over to the $130 to $150 range I think Quintero would be a must play. Any of these are comparable to the high end Scottsdale courses at 2 or 3 times the fees.

If you don't have to be in Scottsdale for the trip a hotel move would also save you some money. For me the price differential to be in Scottsdale and golf there don't make a lot of sense as there are great courses around the City that are comparable in quality but much more economical.

How far of a drive are those courses from Scottsdale?

This is for my friend's bachelor party, and he's pretty set on actually staying in Scottsdale. But he's probably open to courses that are within a 30 min drive.

These new details change everything. You can either pay the high rates for Scottsdale's top courses or lower you golf quality. You probably won't be playing high end Scottsdale courses for $100 and you certainly won't be driving far in under 30 minutes. Most of the places I listed would be around the 1 hour drive mark in regular traffic.

As an aside, Arizona has as many golf courses as it has pizza places, Mexican food eateries and espresso establishments.

Okay. Not really... but it sure seems that way.

I would not go all the way to the West Valley for golf. You can find deals in the Scottsdale area, Papago Golf Course is one, and is on the South Scottsdale/ Tempe border. You should not have to go any further than that. I do not have a list of all of the current rates in the area, maybe someone knows of a website that provides that?
