Do what you want, but why not stay in Phoenix and take advantage of some things here ... or stay within Arizona and explore the attractions the state has to offer?
That's why I'm here. To get info. Your sentiment has been echoed by friends as well, so I'm crossing it off the list. I've never been there so I didn't know it was a small, boring town with not a whole lot around there.

I'm leaning towards Boulders and exploring from there. I've been to the area several times so I'm trying to find something new. Thanks.

The Boulders is less than 15 minutes from the aforementioned and much praised Musical Instrument Museum. The name is misleading - it's more about world cultures and how music relates to the human experience. The Africa/middle east and Asia galleries were fascinating. Verde Canyon Railroad then dinner in Cottonwood. Go for first class if you can (it's not that much more). I took the wife and family on that trip for Mothers Day and a great time was had by all.

So funny how Arizonans view PS vs Californians. Palm Springs is a joke, I don't know why everyone in LA loves it so much. It's basically a bootleg version of Scottsdale.

Things I would heavily consider:
-Lake Saguaro. It is a really beautiful lake with wild horses that surround it. You can easily spend a day in the lake seeing as it is very big, and there are great hiking trails that surround it. It only takes me around 30 mins to drive to when I'm back at my place in Scottsdale.
- Scottsdale. I would try to spend a day traveling around Scottsdale. 125 art galleries, the museum of the west(a very cool/new), and plenty of shops and restaurants for you to explore.

Yes, but go on to Sedona for dinner. Nothing to see in Cottonwood.

To those who mentioned driving the Apache Trail, it should be mentioned that you should NOT do it if you don't have something that would be reasonably competent offroad. I'd only do it if you have a truck or at the very least something all-wheel drive with a bit of ground clearance (Subaru Outback or the like). The road is not smooth in many stretches and there can be some big ruts.

Good point. You can get to Tortilla Flat just fine, it's just past there the road gets really bad.

I agree. You should NOT attempt driving that road (which was lots of fun!) unless you have some sort of truck/SUV. I drove it in my Jeep and while it did well there were some spots...

I did it in a Ford Focus. Rental cars are all-terrain!
