Saw a surf-punk band here recently that was friggin' great.

You can't expect anything to be like it was 40 years ago. Music can still be good without running over the same ground repeatedly.
I wouldn't even mind if the Phoenix music scene could be like it was 15-20 years ago with the upswing in alternative-based bands that made it big on the national scene.

Nobody around here has the passion and/or wants to put in the work. There's so much more you can do now with how far computers, interfaces, digital recording has come in general. So many steps you skip right over (granted, you need the knowledge and work ethic). I came up with guys like Bulb, Shane Gibson (RIP), Alex Wade, and Ola Englund being "other guys on the forums" and now they're all fully endorsed, on magazine covers, touring the world, recording and producing other bands. Band guys around here don't get what it's like these days, the whole DIY ethic. I've pretty much given up on having musician friends here... even to yap about music with. I ran into Alex Torres (ex-Greeley Estates) on New Year's Eve right after I moved back here in 2013, and he's the last musician around here I chatted with that knew what was up. Everyone else has been an eyebrow raiser for me.
