It won't be cost prohibitive. That will more than pay for itself in a decade or so. Furthermore, it will allow us to attract international carriers and possibly have an international wing.

The real thing holding us back isn't land but business travelers. The Phoenix metro doesn't have the number companies and business travelers to sell first class and business class flights to entice international carriers to fly here. That's the real reason.

Every problem in Phoenix essentially comes down to this: high paying jobs! We need to focus on bringing more of those here even if it means dangling carrots do so (eliminate state income tax)

On the other side of the spectrum, there's an azcentral.com feature about the decline of AA's hub:

American Airlines is shrinking in Phoenix

Nothing is too earth shattering in the article. While AA's operation is smaller than it was at the time of the merger, most of the other airlines' operations are larger.

Also, the "shrinkage" is to be expected and has occurred elsewhere as a result of other airline mergers.

Ya, American is huge here at the DFW. Charlotte used to be US Airways hub so that is being taken over by American, so Its not much of a need in AZ.

Note that DFW is a bit too far east to replace PHX, and LAX doesn't have the capacity. CLT won't have any effect on PHX at all since both were pre-merger US Airways hubs. PHX may be downsized, but will continue to serve a role for AA.

This seems to remain highly debatable. While AA has shrank in terms of passengers here some of that is due to smaller planes being put in place, the airline has added new destinations (not sexy ones, but new indeed) demonstrating how PHX plays a role in the largest airline in the world. As they've shrank we've also seen new airlines fill in some of that gap like Frontier and others. Another note is that many of the passengers who are not coming here anymore were just connecting passengers anyways, still in impact but not as big of an impact as losing flights of passengers who were destined to spend time on the ground in Arizona.

It is kind of a shame there are no direct international flights from Sky Harbor to anywhere in Asia.
Actually, they did bring EVA Air 777-300ER came to PHX over 6 years ago during Spring Training trip. This is for LA Dodgers & San Diego Padres teams.

And also, JAL came to PHX over a few years ago during Spring Training trips and also, Northwest Airlines did bring 747-200 aircraft to PHX for over 8 years ago. This is for LA Dodgers teams who flown to Beijing, China during Spring Training trips. I saw 747-200 came to PHX when I was at work.

Yes, we drove from Phoenix to Las Vegas during on roads trips over 2 years ago. It was first-time ever since we drove to San Diego trips with my uncle & my cousin, too. Because of the ticket price. It's too extremely expensive. We can't fly to Las Vegas anymore. Too expensive!!!

Until the day comes that all cities are willing to say no subsidies you either pay to play or get left behind. There is some element of truth to the argument of tax breaks, if you give a company a tax break to relocate here, the economic growth you get still exceeds having nothing at all.

But not all that fair. And I know it happens all over the planet. But eventually all taxes have to be coughed up.... Guess who gets the honors......
