I don't think we need an outright ideological mayor, I don't think it's the right forum. The mayor should represent and manage the city.

Taking a hardline would have incited unnecessary attention and likely unrest. Unneeded, the best way to deal with this was to make it go away quietly while not raising too many feathers.

But I think this kind of stance kind of backfired and wound up with everyone not happy. Bird Street on the last page I think framed it best:

I think the safest political answer and being on the right side of the law, following it, would have been to say he's bound to follow federal law and Phoenix will never be a sanctuary city as a result, his hands are tied. I think he would have been in a much better place politically and most important, stating he'll follow the duties of office/the law he swore he'd uphold. I think the vast majority of people would have respected this clarity.

Exactly had the answer from him AND the city council been "we are bound by state and federal laws, laws that we and everyone else in the great state of Arizona must adhere to" there would have been no reasonable complaint to be had.

Notice I said "reasonable". We are not dealing with reasonable people for the most part...

Yes, heaven forbid we upset people with the truth of the matter...

Maricopa County sheriff explains new policy on ICE 'courtesy holds'

ICE calls Sheriff Paul Penzone's new Maricopa County jail policy a 'dangerous change,' but judges across U.S are ruling against immigration detainers

On one hand, we were doing these courtesy holds, which cost us money.

On the other, this make it look like Penzone is doing something wrong when he's actually [legally] doing the right thing. Why should the County have to subsidize the Federal Government? We have better uses for that money.

As long as Penzone follows the LAW I can't see any issues. ICE just needs to be freed up to step it up and do THEIR job, unlike what's gone on over the last decade or so. If that means more ICE agents or a division to specifically handle pending jail releases then so be it...

I agree. If it's not our place to do this, we shouldn't be. ICE should be stepping up their game and it shouldn't be Maricopa county picking up the tab. And it looks like ICE/DHS is going to make things move quicker in this regard:

Wowwww I am wanting to move to Phoenix and you are all a bunch of right wing bigots. I am strongly left leaning and I think that refugees need sanctuary and places like big cities have lots of resources for them. It only makes sense. Wow...

The irony in your sentence speaks volumes. Don't even bother coming here.
