Also, I strongly disagree with many of the posts regarding "negotiating" a higher starting salary. Unless you have lots of experience and/or above average qualifications, negotiating may be perceived as arrogance and a turn off.

Accept the job you are most comfortable with and be a model employee. Perform as you would want an employee to perform for you if the tables were turned. Always ON TIME or even a little early, No GOOFING OFF with excessive "smoke / potty breaks" and, above all, no frequent SICK CALLS.

Follow those basic attendance rules and the pay raises will soon follow.

Good Luck,
Sorry. You are wrong. Pay raises, for state jobs, are set in stone, no matter how wonderful you are.

No she's right actually.

A promotion is not a pay raise.

My point is basic and will reward . . .

Do not reject an otherwise desirable position simple due to the starting wage.

Regardless of State or Private Industry . . . once your foot is in the door, a pay raise and/or promotion is much easier to obtain once you have proven yourself than trying to negotiate a higher wage prior to accepting the position.

Hello everyone thanks for your input. But I was joking about the bar. I will be looking for a studio or something. I'm single 25 m with only a car payment. I'm not just moving because the bar. When I lived in Vegas I fell in love with the dessert! I was born and raised in Oregon I want something different! When I had moved back to Oregon for my ex I felt like I gave that up. And here I feel I have a chance to get it back. There a lil back info on why I want to move!

I was offered a position with the state and was able to negotiate my starting salary. The position I applied for was a Grade 26 and had a pay range and they offered in the middle of that range, I countered near the top of the range and it was accepted.

How did you approach doing a counter offer?

Back off, Bummer, on the "loser" comment. If you've never worked for the state of Arizona, you don't know of what you speak. PhxBarb is not talking about promotions, she's talking about rate of pay at hire. While things are somewhat more flexible in recent years since so many state positions are uncovered now, it is NOT the same as the private sector by any means, as there have always been regulations that govern such things.

If I were the OP, I would be looking in the private sector in health care jobs. In state service, those jobs lag behind the private sector in terms of pay.
