Melrose is in Midtown, not Uptown/North Central.

Have some family that live near 7th Avenue and Northern in one of the classic North Central neighborhoods. What they've told me is that the kids in their neighborhood either go to places like Basis or other charter schools, private schools and then some of the higher ranked public schools in the area.

Not like the old days where you were tied down to a school in your neighborhood as the only option for your kids.

That is one of the nicer, older neighborhoods in the north central area. The only thing is the shopping choices are limited to 19th Avenue & Northern, 7th Street & Glendale, 16th Street & Northern, or Sunnyslope: not exactly close by or walkable. But it is good to know that some parents have wised up and are utilizing the better private schools instead of the poorly performing public schools. Still, I'm not a huge fan of charters because they essentially use public tax money, which defeats the whole idea of private education.

Those are definitely not the only shopping choices, and what's at 16th & Northern? That's just a Best Western and some offices. Not really a big commercial intersection. People in that area are more likely to do major shopping at Christown Mall area or pop down over to the 16th & Camelback shopping area. Both still within 10 minutes or so.

My mistake. I meant 16th Street & Glendale, not 16th & Northern. You're right about those other shopping areas, but my point is the residents who live in the vicinity of 7th Avenue & Northern have to drive a fairly considerable distance for basic shopping needs. It's a great area to live, but not exactly close to amenities ... and not exactly pedestrian friendly.

It's also not a long drive to the 7th Street and Bell area where there's a ton of shopping.
