We've visited in the spring for the last 5 years. Walking distance to dining and moderately priced don't go together, especially during typical snowbird months. Prices are higher. The closer you get to amenities, the higher the prices.

We've stayed at the Residence Inn Chandler/Fashion Center a few times because our son lived nearby. There are definitely plenty of places to eat that are within walking distance and a drug store/Walmart also within walking distance. The bonus with this location is that it's less than 5 minutes to get on the 101. It's not a scenic area obviously, but it worked for us.

One warning, and this will be true no matter where you stay: lots of kids soccer and baseball (or whatever) teams stay at the hotels in the Spring. We've run into polite, respectful kids and families, and we've run into teams with parents that were more interested in how much they could drink each night and ignored the kids. The kids ran wild.

I know AirBNB can be confusing. In improving the site, they've made it more complicated to find what you want. Our first year there we tried to rent via AirBNB as we've had great experiences in other cities. The woman wanted to take it offline and skip the AirBNB charge--a big no from us. We're going to try it again in March. We found a great place near ASU. It is useful if you know the areas a bit when renting from AirBNB.

The Budget Suites is OK - not great, but decent. Iif you can afford it, I'd go with AirBnB instead. However, if you really want an extended stay hotel in the Tempe/PHX area at a reasonable price, check out Studio 6 in Tempe on Wendler Drive, just off Baseline and I-10. It's a lot nicer than Budget Suites, but you won't have a separate living room like you would at Budget. I checked out the Budget Suites in Central Phoenix and the one in Tempe, and both were clean enough but pretty worn out and you pay for extras. I'm a single female, I stayed at Studio 6 for almost 3 months when I first moved here (Sept-Dec 2018) and had no problems. Good neighborhood, easy access to most of the metro area, and restaurants and grocery stores are nearby. Neighborhood has not gone downhill since then, at least not as of last month when I was in the area.
