My husband (AA) and I (caucasian) just moved here from Shakopee, MN. So far we absolutely love it here. We live in Surprise. The crime is different as it is spread out. Surprise is pretty low crime, but you have to be careful everywhere. There are a lot of Hispanics of course and schools seemed mixed. Everyone seems so nice here. Nicer than MN. Not that I disliked it there (just the weather). But you are right that everyone is from there. I was from Iowa then Kansas City.

(She is AA and I am Caucasian.) It is good to know that IR couples are not a rarity in AZ. We had thought about moving to Atlanta as she has a significant portion of her family there, but we visit enough to recognize it as a city/region that we would not want to raise our family in. Currently we live in Brooklyn Park which is just outside of Minneapolis. We really like the diversity and the number of multi-cultural families in our area. However, the winters here suck and there are some annoying things about this region as well. Overall I wouldn’t cry if I stayed here forever but we are open to moving to another part of the country. One of the things we don’t like is that the people here are nice, but at the same time they are clicky and somewhat fake. It’s difficult to make friends as our experience shows that most of the people here grew up together and our closed-in. Most of the friends we have made moved here from somewhere else, like us. We came to MN from Aurora, CO. We will have to travel to AZ and experience it for ourselves a few times before we actually decide to move and would be looking at a 2-4 year horizon to do so. I will be finishing my undergrad in Business in 2010, currently working as an Analyst, and my wife is a Registered Nurse so I wouldn’t foresee any employment issues.

What are some of the cities in which we would likely like to live?

I hear the real estate market tanked down there, would it be possible to get a decent house on a golf course between 200-300k? What can I expect for this range?

Living in Denver, it often would be in the 90’s with drier heat than you would see in Atlanta. What would you compare the 100+ days too?

What are the police like? Are there major gang problems? (As a teenager I was involved in this lifestyle, and just want to have an understanding of the prevalence of this culture in Phoenix. Minneapolis has significant Chicago ties so by no means is this some gang free utopia.)

Send the poster a direct message. That is the best way to get your specific questions to them answered, and have a conversation, rather than using an old thread. Good luck!
