HX guy, before you go out to buy an ash, check out Dahlbergia sissoo (common name sissoo tree). Not native here, but grows phenomenally well here, evergreen, meaning it looses old leaves, in a typical year, when the new ones start growing in the spring. Leaf is "aspen like". Buy one with a single trunk, and as it grows, gradually raise the canopy to the height that you want it to be. Best time to plant here is September/ October, except for those trees that really thrive on heat, but I think you could safely plant now if you are dilligent about watering until it is established. Fast growing when well irrigated. . . sound like a perfect choice for you.

To finish off this long story, I went back to the nursery and swapped out the Walnut tree for a Fan-tex Ash.

I got a killer deal on it. 32" box, probably about 15-18' tall...talked them down to $160! It was originally marked $800 and I know they never actually sell them at full price, but usually they do 50% off so it's still a $400 tree for $160. Not bad right? If anyone is looking for any kind of plant or tree I definitely recommend checking it out, some really good deals.

About the sissio, I don't like the droopy look it has to its crown and the leaves are a bit too small for my liking.
