The gated communities I know of around here are basically just a collection of houses. There might be a park, community pool, etc. but I don't know of any that have shopping.

Coto de Caza, Ca. has a little general store inside along with their golf and raquet club, horse stables, etc. but then it's a HUGE development.

DC Ranch and Verrado both have their own faux "downtowns" or Main Streets with shops, groceries, etc. but both communities are only partially gated.

Canoa Ranch in Green Valley has each home section gated. The gates are closed from 9PM to 6AM. There is an ungated route to the Canoa Golf Clubhouse and restaurant. Each homeowner has a remote that opens the gate. If somone wants to get in during the closed hours they use a telephone at the gate to call the homeowner from a list. The homeowner determines if the call is legitimate. Then the homeowner presses a number on the phone and the gate opens.
