Beware of the cactus (particularly Jumping Cholla), too! I can tell you that it's not fun to pull out of your dog's paws or muzzle. I have to really watch my Midwestern-raised beagles when we come out to Phoenix.

True, the "jumping cholla" is also known as "The teddy bear cactus" because it looks so cute and fuzzy you just want to run up and hug it. But the needles release VERY easily unlike a saguaro and they hook themselves in deep and good.

When hiking I have stepped on the little balls on accident that fell on the trail and they went right through the soles of my hiking boots. I hate those things, the fuzzy looking cacti that look the friendliest are actually the meanest.

Taking dogs hiking in the desert is not a good idea, due to the cactus, particularly cholla. Those little "buds" can end up a long way from the cactus itself, and can really wreak havoc on a dog. The OP sounds like hers don't leave the house and yard, though.

I had a terrible experience once when my dog had a big cholla bud stuck in the bottom of her paw. We were out in the middle of the desert and it took a long time for me to find something I could knock it off with.

I usually have my "Leatherman" with me now and they have needle nose pliers built in. I also keep a pocket comb handy, that works really good for removing cholla buds.
