Just got done watching a story of him last night on Nightline ABC . You gotta love this guys no-nonsense approach to restoring law and order despite his rather controversial dealings ! Love seeing on the TV how he makes his inmates wear pink underwear and have pink bedding along with the humiliating striped shirts and pants.

So, im just wondering what the consensus is about Sherriff Joe on this Forum ?? Is he a modern John Wayne type hero, or, a media-attention seeking bad Hombre ?!

Thanks.

There are plenty of threads about Sheriff Arpaio already, in which you could have learned the answer to your question had you searched. There IS no consensus--could you expect one?

People either love him or hate him. You must not live here, as nothing about this topic is news to those who do, and we really don't need another thread on him, sorry.

I love him! Most of all, I respect a man who stands by what he believes in and doesn't allow the bleeding hearts to sway his decisions. He speaks his mind and doesn't care if it's PC. I agree that he appears to like publicity but show me any political figure that does not. Jail should not be warm and fuzzy and should be a place that people do not want to return to; afterall isn't it supposed to be punishment! Being an animal lover, I really admire what he has done with the animal shelter. So he gets a thumbs up from me......

down here in Pima, Clarence Dupnik has been sheriff since Christ was a child and we never hear a peep out of him....I don't even know what he looks like....the whole country knows what Arpaio looks like!....

not saying I'm anti-Arpaio, but the publicity-seeking is not a good thing....I mean, starring in a reality show?....c'mon!

I tend to agree with you Sassy ; he seems like a person in authority who is sick and tired of the legal system that is full of loopholes . Kind of like Harry Callahan in Dirty Harry (Clint Eastwood) . Im pleased to see he is serving his 5th term in Office and is making progress in cleaning up town ! I salute him for that.

Moderator cut: orphaned quote

I wasn't going to bother to post again, but.... Well, first, a search for "Sheriff" in the Phoenix forum would have turned up all the prior threads. That way the same discussion doesn't happen over and over again, and the progression of opinions, including those that may not post as much now, stays together and doesn't get spread all over several threads.

Second, what "consensus?? What does that word mean to you? Merriam Webster defines it:

1 a : general agreement : unanimity
b : the judgment arrived at by most of those concerned
2 : group solidarity in sentiment and belief

Some people have said in this thread (and others) that they like him, others have said they don't. That's not a consensus.

Many of those who think he's great, like yourself, don't live here and don't have to pay the legal bills and the huge lawsuit settlements/verdicts his actions have generated. So you can count me on the other side of the argument from you, if you are keeping score. I am embarrassed and offended by him. And I'm not a "bleeding heart" either. You don't have to be to oppose him.

Sorry you were offended by my reply, but the Sheriff has been discussed repeatedly here, with folks lined up on both sides of the fence. I'm not "throwing my weight around" here (I have none to throw). But I'm not the only one who reminds people that a discussion is not new and has been covered by threads that can be accessed through the search function. There's a wealth of information on all sorts of topics already here. The software here is very useful, why not take advantage of it? You would find those threads interesting reading, I'm sure.

//www.city-data.com/forum/phoen...-believes.html

//www.city-data.com/forum/phoen...-money-tv.html

These are just a sample. If you refine the search by using the word "Arpaio" instead, you'll get a more focused list.

Happy Reading!
