The original quote: "Those who would give up essential Liberty, to purchase a little temporary Safety, deserve neither Liberty nor Safety."

Is this really an "essential" liberty?

I agree with your statement. I'm all from preventing further government control in most areas of my life, however there are too many people out there who have little common sense or an understanding of how their actions can potentially harm themselves or others.

I'm all for allowing people to harm themselves in any manner possible. Do drugs, huff glue, eat paint chips, drink too much, eat too much, use power tools without protective gear, ride a motorcycle without a helmet...heck ride a motorcycle period, or decide that you're too sick/old and want to be euthanized. Whatever you want to do to yourself...best of luck to you. When that destructive behavior begins to harm others everything possible must be done to prevent it or punish it when it occurs. Until the car can drive itself texting or talking on the phone while driving should be illegal. This is common sense.

The poster talking about "essential liberties" (as if texting or talking on the phone falls under that definition) strikes me as being very idealistic.

Sometimes a little condensation never hurts.

Yes, the freedom to communicate as you wish is essential.

I'm sure Daniel Montano would agree.

You'd be perfectly free to communicate as much as you want, just not while driving a dangerous vehicle at high speeds. The same way that you're free to drink as much as you want, just not before you drive. There's no civil rights issue here, it's a simple safety issue.

Because the Constitution is meant to give you the right to talk on the phone and text on it while driving a 2 ton machine .

Yes, an adult making a phone call is the same as a car full of giggling teenage girls. Precisely the same.
