Police hand out tickets to Great Allegheny Passage bicyclists at Waterfront - Pittsburgh Post-Gazette

A couple of classic quotes from the article:

Quote:
"Oh, wow, I'm in for a serious load of trouble," said Shane Novak, 38, of East McKeesport, when he heard that West Homestead police are issuing citations for failure to stop at the crossings. "Everybody blows through them."

Would fear of a citation make him stop in the future?
"Yeah, definitely," Mr. Novak said, before pedaling off and immediately running two more stop signs.

Quote:
"This stopping wastes energy, time, brakes, gas," said Mr. Enrico, 59, who was just finishing a 30-mile bike trip that began at the Pump House and wound through Squirrel Hill before returning to the Waterfront. "It should be that if it's clear, you go."

I anticipate this thread to be a civil and well thought discussion concerning bicyclist laws and etiquette across the greater Pittsburgh area.

Now only if they'd ticket the cyclists who ride the wrong way down one way streets in Oakland!

Thread progression:
Bikers don't obey traffic laws!; So what, neither do cars!; bikers need to stay off the roads!; trucks & SUV drivers purposely try to hit me with their confederate flags!; bikers are stupid!; motorists are murders!; and then it will get uncivil

Don't forget the pedestrians. They don't follow traffic laws either.

It is irrelevant whether or not cars break the law. Saying something is wrong is okay just because other people are doing something wrong is how kids think not adults.

Both bikers and drivers are wrong for not obeying traffic laws. Now, if you want to argue which is less wrong that is something else.
