I really enjoyed watching the Pirates when I was a kid growing up here in Pittsburgh. "Lumber and Lighting" and "The Family" come to mind. We sure had a great team in the '70s. Now it is more of a go enjoy the ballpark with a view kind of thing. The baseball part isn't really the main event. It is just something going on, like kids playing in the park when you are sitting on a park bench. You sort of watch, but not with great interest.

Not sure if the Pirates will ever be much again. I wish they would form another league for small cities. It would be more fun.

it's called the minor leagues. the new parks are world's better than the 60's era monstrosities/ they're basically the old parks with new technology for building. it's much more about the game than the old parks which were cost savings initiatives and neighborhood demolition excuses. of course, the pirates were supposed to get better by having a new stadium they didn't pay for.

pirates have fourth worst attendance this century (actually, considering the state of the team, that's not that bad. the rays had worse attendance despite fielding some good teams.) lest this be about market size, st. louis was one of the tops in attendance
Yankees, Dodgers, Cardinals lead baseball in attendance this century, with Rays and Marlins at bottom | The Business Journals=#

I've always been a great fan of baseball, played a good chunk of my life and used to go to games all the time (During the Bonds, Bonilla, Bream, Drabek, Van Slyke era). Now its about going to see the other teams that play. Inter-league play has brought those teams that not normally would be seen to Pittsburgh. The first game i'm going to this year is Pirates vs. Red Sox. And to be honest those tickets weren't that expensive.

Anyway, the Pirates surely are playing better ball. I thought that the pitching would be suspect and the hitting a little bit better. It has been the opposite, although the hitting seems to be coming around. If the pitching holds steady and the Buccos start hitting, the Pirates will finish over .500 and the North Shore will be the place to be this summer.
Nobody asked me, but if the Pirates hang around the .500 mark, Pittsburghers need to get behind the Buccos and get their butts down to tom PNC Park. Remember, only about six years ago the Penguins were ready to leave town before they drafted Crosby. Mellon Arena was half empty during weekday games. There was a lot of negativity surrounding the team. Now, they have legions of fans, many of which only became hockey fans recently. I call them bandwagoneers. There is nothing wrong with that. The Pirates would love, and frankly need Pittsburghers to jump on their bandwagon. They play eighty-one dates over on the North Shore every year. Their importance to Pittsburgh cannot be understated. They are arguably just as, if not more important to Pittsburgh than the Steelers and Penguins. That has nothing to do with what your favorite sport is or who your favorite team is.

Doumit's homer proves to be winning hit as the Pirates reach .500
sorry about that. yes, baseball's 81 games do a much better job of bringing in revenue than the other sports. if you run a nearby bar or such, having that influx 81 times versus 8-10 x's makes a big difference.

Pirates third baseman Alvarez back in lineup

Nothing like the great American sport. I've celebrated every recent Pittsburgh victory as a casual fan, but have been waiting and faithfully following and attending for two decades... and I just have to say GO BUCS!!!
