There's probably a blog out there called "Crap Yinzers Like" that can explain these things.

It is a yinzer joint if it is called the "Oyster House" and doesn't have oysters except deep fried in some huge mess of stuff. If you want oysters go to Rolands in the Strip. They are pretty good. Never been to the Oyster House and to be honest, I don't think I will bother. Looks like a dump with crap food.

I like the fried fish sandwich at the Original Oyster House.

Now there's an idea. Bet one could sell a few ads.
Btw, a search for "crap yinzers like" shows this thread as #1 on Google.
It's wide open

Someone needs to get Ramsey in that place. Anyone know what it was like in its heyday?

Mainly the reason I like it is because it's a dive with old time photos on the walls that serves greasy food at cheap prices in a distinctly Pittsburgh atmosphere. Kinda takes you back to when this city was simpler and downtown wasn't the corporate whore that it is today. I actually like the food though, it's good.

It was in one of those Pittsburgh specials, and it looked to me like it has been pretty much the same forever. Certainly they have been doing their fried oysters the same way for a very long time.

And maybe that is the problem, although I agree with ATC that it has a certain Old School charm the way it is.

I saw it in an old WQED show from many years ago and it was the same. They put one little oyster in a big glob of dough and that is what it was known for. Even the cook said, many times the people don't even think there is an oyster in it, so you weren't exactly going there for oysters. The fish sandwich was supposed to be good. It is an old yinzer type place, which IMHO is a little better than all the chains that are moving into Market Square. Sadly as rents get higher, you will see more and more of the chain stuff taking over. Sort of like what happened to Walnut Street. Just a normal progression and it can't be stopped because it is money driven.

I like their fried fish and chips when I'm in the mood for greasy fried food. They have an interesting pepper vinegar to put on them.

I agree. For instance while I do like the occasional gourmet burger, I still prefer a good old classic burger and fries at non-chain restaurants such as Cherries or something from George Aiken.

Unfortunately Pittsburgh's downtown, much like the city where I live, is being taken over by restaurant chains and places that charge $8.00 just for a burger that is a good bit smaller than the bun.
