Moved to the area in January 7 2012 from NYC.
Now that I am settled looking to get back into Tennis.

Is there a permit needed to play in public parks courts?
As I search for the topic I found some particular places that seem to require it, but could not find anything general to the area.

I should think in most parks you can just walk right on to an unclaimed court and start playing.

A one-time acquaintance of mine put together this resource that maps many of the public tennis courts in Allegheny County including descriptions for some of the park and the condition of the court. It looks like it may not have been updated in a while but it's a place to start.

There are some local leagues that you can sign up with or get on the waiting list for.

A decade or two ago, CitiParks had a vibrant tennis program. Alas, no more.

My husband plays tennis. At the outdoor public courts, you can just show up, claim a court, and play. The indoor public court in mellon park has a fee and you sign up. There are also classes you can drop in and take for like $12 each. He really enjoys them.

I found the Citiparks site on my search of sites/info about tennis in the area. Was on my list of places to call. In you opinion are they still worth at call to check about classes/lessons?

You don't have to pay to use public courts, however if you want to join a tennis club with nicer courts you could try Lakevue Athletic Club or Oxford Athletic Club, both of which are in the Pine-Richland, Hampton, Mars area.

Oh yes, they are worth it.
Reasonably priced and at good locations.
That's how I learned.

You're going to want to meet people to play with. There's no better way to do that.

Oxford Athletic Club looks nice. Made a note to check them out later. I think I should explore as many options as possible before committing to some form of membership.

Thanks for pointing those two clubs.

Thanks. Will definitely check them out.
I joined the Tennis meetup, but doesn't seem all that active so need to continue looking for good venues to find people to play with.
