Spend a day on Presque Isle, rent a bicycle, hang out on the beach, swim in the lake, rent a boat, go fishing, etc. It's beautiful there.

The huge and impressive Kinzua Dam and man made lake in Warren County is on the way to Niagara.

And if you like more urbane and sophisticated activities, you can gamble at a real, live Indian casino in Salamanca, NY.

i used to camp up there. do you go there? it seemed by the early 2000s it was just getting crowded. there could be someone on a boat across the water and downstream, maybe 3 miles away, and youd hear them drunk and acting like fools into the early AM. thats when you wish one of these bears you hear about pays them a visit. the reservoir is beautiful and nice to enjoy when its quiet.

ive never been to that casino, but i would like to try it. is the casino building itself a nice place (aesthetically?)

Also, the vineyards around Niagara-sur-Mer (as we jokingly call it) are well worth an afternoon.

Finally, given this year is the bicentennial of the War of 1812 (a much bigger deal on the Canadian side, being their "war of independence"), there are related events almost every weekend in the Niagara Region:

Yep, we thought Niagara-on-the-lake was really beautiful and actually visited a winery for the ice wine. There's a neat little waterfront area where you can look across the lake and see Toronto, which I think was only about another hour of driving.

I also think visiting Erie and the Presque Isle State Park is a good idea as well. There are some really nice beaches.
