The wife and i are going up to Pittsburgh this weekend (aug 24th-26th) and we are looking for any helpful advice on where to drink/dine/shop. We are both in our young 30's, professional, and have been to Pittsburgh several times for weekend trips, but it never fails we end up falling into the same routine while we visit, and we know there is so much more this great city has to offer.

I have been reading Pittsburgh Magazine and it lists the top 25 restaurants in town, and i'm really intrigued by a few places that it describes such as Legume, Meat and Potatoes, and Cure.

We are most familiar with downtown and North Shore, but where is the best area of town that has the best scene for restaurants and pubs?

Thanks for any feedback! We can't wait to visit this weekend

You should check out the South Side (Carson Street). There are a whole lot of pubs and restaurants there. You could also do some shopping at the South Side Works.

Walnut Street in Shadyside, or the Squirrel Hill business district would be other options for dining / shopping in the city. Lawrenceville has some nice restaurants and pubs, too (Butler Street). Have you checked out the Strip District yet?

Thanks angel, E. Carson Street sounds like the place to be! From what i have read it compares to the Gas Lamp District of San Diego, and i know how energetic that is. Fat Heads sounds like a pretty cool sports bar/restaurant, if i am reading up on it correctly.

South Side Works, hmm, i don't believe i have been there either. Hopefully i can find time Saturday afternoon to head over there.

I have never checked out the Strip District, but i plan to. Thanks again, i'm excited to venture out to some new places!

Definitely check out the Strip District on a Saturday morning/ afternoon and eat at Pamela's. There are a lot of street vendors out on Saturdays and it is a fun experience.

A few food places that I'm familiar with...

If you like Indian food, Coriander has an all you can eat buffet for $9-10. It's near the corner of Murray Ave and Douglas St in Squirrel Hill.

Also in Squirrel Hill is Taza 21 which serves Syrian food if I'm not mistaken-they have food such as baba ganoush.

I personally dig Salem's on 29th and Penn in the Strip District. You can't miss it- it has a huge mural on the building which has an adjoining market. It's Middle Eastern food. If nothing else, get their fries for $1.50 - you get a helluva lot of fries! They're more crunchy than the kind they serve at fast food places or the Potato Patch at Kennywood.

Fatheads in the Southside on 1805 E Carson St. They have insanely huge sandwiches called "headwiches" which have some of the craziest (and sometimes Pittsburgh-centric) ingredients. Best of all, they're open late. Fat Head's Menu

Off the beaten path is Z Best Barbecue on Herron Ave, which serves soul food. Your best bet would be to go here during daylight hours. I usually get a dinner with 1/3 slab of ribs, a small helping of ribs and macaroni, and do they fill me up! If you're a lightweight eater you may find this whole meal can serve as a lunch AND dinner! New customers always get to try a side dish for free.

I hope this helps, and if you have any more questions, send me a PM.

I think you have a great plan--the South Side will make an excellent base for a "foodie" visit to Pittsburgh.
