Does anyone know anything about The Washington Plaza? Would it be a good, safe place to live, for the first year, while I get my bearings in Pittsburgh? Seems pretty central, very close to DT. The highrise has its own shuttles going to and from DT everyday. Just wondering if anyone here knows anything about it. Thanks.

I frequently make deliveries to Washington Plaza. The property seems to be fairly well-maintained, clean, and secure, albeit "dated"-looking. There is a concierge/doorman, and judging by the one interaction I've had with a leasing representative the staff seems pleasant to deal with. I can't be a good judge of how the noise levels are within the apartments, how well the appliances work (or don't work), etc., but the people I've made deliveries to all seem like normal, well-adjusted, middle-class people. I can't fathom such people living in a place long-term that was undesirable.

A lot of Duquesne students rent apartments in there also.

It's funny that you mention this because I was just talking today with one of my close friend as to how Washington Plaza's shuttle bus is not only a convenient amenity to its residents, but also serves as a mobile billboard with its phone number on the bus in big letters.

I work at the building, but I'll do my best to give an unbiased and fair opinion as possible. Most of the front desk staff is friendly and helpful, some exceptions, but mostly good. The maintenance and housekeeping staff is pretty much the same way. Leasing office is a bit of a mixed bag (simply do a "Washington Plaza Apartments" search and read some reviews to get a taste).

But like SCR said, the building, though dated, is reasonably up-to-date inside. The views from virtually any apartment are fantastic and stunning, have to be seen to be believed. Even though the building is only 22 stories tall, because it is somewhat up the hill from Downtown, it's top matches roughly the Gulf Building's in elevation. The grounds are probably the largest for any apartment building complex in the core of Pittsburgh and it is very lush and green. There is a swimming pool, tennis court, horseshoe pit, volleyball court, barbeque grilling areas and (I'll call it) a mini-walking path. The building also has a three story parking garage and a few separate businesses on the lower level including Tailgaters Bar & Grill. They also have the pretty "standard" indoor amenities such as laundry facilities, TV room/seating area, gym/weight room, tanning bed, sauna, vending machines, and a large party hall space that is due to open up imminently.

I think the apartment rates are fair given all these amenities and its close proximity to Downtown and especially the Consol Energy Center, not to mention whatever will come of the old Civic Arena site. If I had a more steady income (I'm a recent college graduate), I would definitely consider living there!

If you do have any other questions, though, feel free to ask!

I was looking at this place when I move up that way this winter. Looks pretty good from the outside the reviews are good. It is on my list of places to visit and possibly rent from.

Impala, I believe you. After all, you work there. But on the web there are a lot of reviews re Washington Plaza and the vast majority of the reviews give WP a low, low rating. Can you tell me why there might be so many bad reviews? Not at all trying to back you up against a wall. Just wondering. The reviews scare me. LOLOLOLOL

Thanks!

Washington Plaza has lots of students from Duquesne and the downtown schools.

It seems fine if you don't mind living near a lot of young people and aren't that concerned about the frequent traffic jams when the consol or palumbo centers end their games.

Ditto! I was just offered a job at UPMC Mercy and I've been researching apartments withing walking distance. From the website it looking/sounds like a nice place but the online reviews beg to differ. So that scares me as well. Would be nice to get more feedback from people who've actually lived there. Or, can anybody else chime in on apartments within walking distance to UPMC Mercy?
