Also a Convention Center Hotel is needed in a big way.
The hotel monaco did a good job in philly with the lafayette building...id love to see them do union trust. The convention center hotel isnt needed which is why it hasnt been built. The convention authority wants it but the citu hasnt been ready to support it without a subsidy yet.

I disagree... It has be documented over and over that in order for Pittsburgh to attract larger Conventions the Convention Center needs more rooms...The Demand is very much there. The Will/Funding is another story.

Developers have become drunk on getting tax-credits and public dollars in order to commit to anything anymore....I sure will be glad when the market gets back to getting projects off the ground with 100% private dollars again, one reason I love PNC.

I disagree. Well documented desire of the convention ctr maybe but that doesnt mean theres enough demand to support a hotel. Its not like putting up a yert for a big festival. The whole convention center charade needs to end.

So you're saying the reason the DLLCC cannot attract larger conventions has nothing to do with the shortage of Hotel Rooms? Lord Knows the structure has the space to host larger.

One only has to look at the current situation of the near sell out of every Hotel in the city with just few events happening on the same weekend.

The demand is there....

69% occupancy hardly means theres extraordinary unmet demand. If there any group of schlubs less truatworthy than convention advocates i dont know of them.a handful of larger conventions doesnt make a profitable hotel.

who said there has to be "extraordinary unmet demand"? 69% current occupancy with the likely hood to host much larger conventions if built speaks well that there is profitable demand there. Doesn't need to have Every Room Full Every Night although there will probably plenty of nights that it will sell out....Nor does it need to be a 500 roomer....I think 200-300 rooms will suffice.

The convention center people want 1000 rooms...so far the market says no

I thought they were shooting more for 500.

500-room Pittsburgh convention center hotel out for proposal - Pittsburgh Business Times

That article states that Pittsburgh is well behind other peer cities in number of rooms. Even if they added a 1000 room convention center hotel, Pittsburgh would still be slightly behind Cincinnati. And the article really doesn't suggest where any additional hotels ought to be (if any more are needed). Convention Center Hotel guests won't be there only for an event in the convention center. Guess the question is, is Downtown and the immediate surrounding area adequately covered?

And what is a "yert"?

Majority of the non full service hotels are hurting. I'll be surprises if the Hyatt on north shore remains open much longer. Occupancy has been very low.

That doesnt suprise me too much - everything in the north shore is so game day dependent which is a shaky business model at best. I dont know of anyone that wants to stay over there unless they are going to a game when there are other options closer to actual things to do which the North Shore lacks (apart from the Casino if you're into that),
