I've known that the Italian Mafia used to be strong in Pittsburgh, but how much of it still exists. I've just finished watching every Sopranos episode (in about a month) and can't get enough of Mob related information. I know New Kensington and Bloomfield used to be big connected places. Also, one of my good friends is convinced that one of those dumpy houses on Baldwin Road in the Hays neighborhood has Mafia related activity going on in it. Does anyone have anymore info to share??

I think the New Kensington mafia was the most powerful in western Pennsylvania. That was the Mannarino family. They are all either dead or gone, I believe only a sister and possibly a cousin or two are left.

There is virtually no mafia presence left in Pittsburgh.

The FBI came down pretty hard on the Sicilian Mafia, and they lost a lot of power. The Calabrese Mafia has been making some headway recently. Not sure if there is any truth to it, but I heard there were some Mafia connections in Sewickley.

The picture in this article from the recent New Kensington thread made me wonder the same thing!

Putting the 'New' back in New Kensington

Here you go.

Oh that's right that's the face of the GOP, the party of thugs and crooks. You can replace that picture with President Fredo, Cheney, DeLay, or a number of the others though.

The mob exists in a variety of places, some are Russian and Asian to the dying older ones of Italian, Jewish and Irish etc. to the street gangs of every city. The mob was always much bigger than the Hollywood version of it.

The mafia left New Ken during the 1970s. They owned a lot of businesses and had employed a lot of people.

The mafia was wonderful for New Ken, part of the downfall of the city was when they left.. LOL.

And Section 8 housing.

very true about the mob leaving new Ken. Having organized crime keeps out the "unorganized" crime in cities. The mob would have never let open street drug dealing, muggings, robberies, etc. I still believe no crime is the best, but that is not reality.
