Eve and other posters, if you don't mind me posting here, but I'm wondering if something like this would be closer to what you are referring to or is more in line with what you prefer: Syracuse Real Estate - 310 Crawford Ave, Syracuse, NY, 13224

not too far away, in spite of the walk score: https://maps.google.com/maps?q=westc...44.07,,0,10.21

Reading about some of the East Side neighborhoods of Pittsburgh(Oakland, Shadyside and Squirrel Hill) reminds me a lot of the East Side of Syracuse south of East Genesee Street and east of I-81/Oakwood Cemetery(Westcott, Scottholm, University Hill, Meadowbrook, etc.) in terms of the Eds and Meds, the major research university in the ACC with other colleges/universities nearby, the Jewish presence, largely being middle class and diverse.

That home you posted is beautiful. $5,600 in taxes for a home priced under $160,000, though? Methinks Pittsburghers need to stop complaining! Wow!

That number isn't necessarily what you pay though. You at least get a STAR exemption and possibly others depending on what you qualify for. As for Syracuse, it has areas of the city that are good and bad, just like any other city.

Okay I just checked it out, that house is assessed for $134,900 and the taxes are $5,600 before any deductions that is insane. In Erie the taxes on the same house would only be $4,400 and I am not sure about Pittsburgh, but probably pretty close. In my previous post I thought the house was assessed for the list price. Syracuse has some crazy high property taxes.

What is the address of the house in question? Those taxes seem out of line.
