Another real estate web site that I have never heard of ranks Pittsburgh as affordable for housing! Quick, someone let them know they are wrong, per that other website I have never heard of (neither of which are City-Data!)

Pittsburgh area ranks high for affordable housing - Pittsburgh Post-Gazette

I agree. You can get a pretty nice house here for 150,000. The problem that many recent graduates have is that they have significant student loans so they probably need more than the median income to afford such a house. Also, car payments are brutal if you don't have a decent down payment.

"The reason Pittsburgh fares so well, said (that web site), is that while the region's median household income of $50,489 is only slightly below the national median income of $51,371, the median home price of $137,000 is significantly lower than the national median of $203,500."

Can you share what these are? I mean affordable cities where people actually want to live. I am not being snarky, I am genuinely curious. My husband was offered a great job in Denver but we have been looking at house prices and we would never get anything nearly as nice as the house we bought in Squirrel Hill three years ago. I had an offer from Seattle and it was an even bigger issue. It's not that we want to leave but it is discouraging to think about seriously downgrading our house if we moved for career reasons.

Plus that's the "REGIONS" median income. Cut out Fayette and Armstrong counties, I'm sure that would drastically increase. Allegheny, Butler, Washington, and maybe even Westmoreland are all at least average.

Personally, without looking at any statistics I would have guessed that both Denver and Seattle would be expensive.

Basically, Midwest cites are cheap, Texas cities and Atlanta.

Maybe Texas, with the exception of Austin. Atlanta is about the same as Pittsburgh, I believe. But Madison, Minneapolis, Chicago, Ann Arbor--all have much more expensive housing.

We moved here from Atlanta and were shocked at how cheap houses were here. Atlanta's experienced a lot more volatility, though.

Other than stuff that's in really awful shape, the cheaper areas of Atlanta tend to be much further out than they are in Pittsburgh, too.
