Lots of schools have an excess of ra-ra sports culture, but the deification of JoePa is what really puts Penn State over the top. The fact it's ongoing is especially troubling, though hopefully it will subside as the years pass and his memory fades.

While I strongly dislike sports culture independent of the PSU scandal, I acknowledge that college athletics have a right to exist and that for better or worse, they're what draw a sizable number of people to specific universities. PSU mostly got what it deserved with the originally imposed sanctions. Retroactively taking away victories is a laughable legal fiction, but the fine and the bowl game ban were merited. I also think that if other colleges had stepped up to the plate and given lucrative offers for the players to join their teams, a one-year moratorium on the football program (a total dismantlement would be overkill) could have had a profound impact and would have been easier to sell.

I was there, too. There were lots of Ped State fans. But, there were far more Pitt fans.
