Default Entering Pittsburgh Thru Fort Pitt Tunnel

Although I've ran across many many videos of this drive, none have come close at actually capturing the "wow" effect you get in person. So, here's the best two video links I can find.

YouTube - Fort Pitt Tunnel

YouTube - Driving into Pittsburgh

Those videos of Ft Pitt tunnel are great but they still cannot truly capture it. It is something you must do in person...it takes the breath away.

Agreed! Every single time I go to Pittsburgh I go out of my way to drive in through the tunnel.

It is one of my absolute favorite areas in Pittsburgh, and I don't think its future could be much brighter. To summarize, back in the day Friendship was a very popular professional-class neighborhood right on the Main Line of the Pennsylvania Railroad as it heads into Pittsburgh (the same Main Line that runs into Philly on the other end, and gives its name to the posh Main Line communities in Philly). As a result Friendship has a lot a beautiful homes on large lots. However, it was hit hard by urban flight and a lot of those homes were converted into apartment buildings. But now that is starting to reverse, and I think Friendship is heading back toward being more of a single-family home neighborhood. However, thanks to its complex history I think it is also going to remain just a bit more bohemian than one might otherwise expect, and indeed the Penn Avenue Arts Initiative is doing a great job in attracting artists to the area. So my feeling is that in some ways Friendship may actually end up being a more interesting place than if it hadn't had the same up and down and up again history.
