I'd speculate that 90% of people who followed this phoney horse race, always knew suburban DC was the target location and the solicitation process was nothing other than a ploy to put pressure on DC for maximum financial contribution. I agree that it'll be a monumental endeavor to attract 5K new employees to DC at Amazon's salary structure and working environment. Also, Bozo's going to have to do monumental damage control with every major city that submitted a proposal if he chooses DC, particularly if it (ever) leaks that DC was always the selection.

It is actually a quite cool place for many reasons and geographically the entire overall area is superb, IMHO. It appears to be a great match for Amazon's stated needs. Early congrats to D.C. /Northern Virginia.

I doubt it.
I think folks like Peduto and Fitzgerald would still be willing to toss anyone else under a bus so that they'd be the first to be able to kiss Bezos' ass. Their reaction in the future will be to offer to give away even more of the farm.

Well, you don't have to actually LIVE in Crystal City. It's not really a city by our mid-atlantic standards, anyway. But the general area is planned to undergo a massive overhaul from its 1950s/60s planning scheme, to one more ped friendly and generally better for residents and visitors.

If you are are younger (up to 40s) and still were thinking of a high-tech job with them, based on their second HQ being in Arlington County, I would STRONGLY suggest you consider it. The DC area is phenomenally beautiful and engaging.

If this is true, this is such good news for Pittsburgh. All Amazon would have done for most of us would have been higher housing costs, higher prices, and even worse traffic. Now maybe will find out how much of our money Peduto et al. were planning to give away.

Even if HQ2 does end up in DC, it can still benefit the Pittsburgh tech industry to have that resource 250 miles away vs. across the country in the Northwest or Silicon Valley.

Yes, we wouldn't want those pesky jobs here in our city to build better schools, infrastructure and have much better public transportation, let alone a much greater airport volume and destinations. Yep, we wouldn't want that. Sure would be nice to progress instead of sit stagnate.

Growth for the sake of growth is not a good thing. This area is in no way capable of handling this kind of growth. Our "leaders" can use all of the money they planned to give away to Amazon to do most of the things you listed. We would not have had the resources to improve any of the things you listed, we would just have had the resources to try to stretch our existing infrastructure to try to accommodate Amazon. This would have been a bad deal for the existing residents of this area if we had promised Amazon nothing. The only winners would have been the politicians who would have use this "win" to move on to higher office.

Maybe now our leaders will start to look at the waste in our government so they can find the funds to modernize our infrastructure. Then maybe some time in the future we would be capable of handling growth like this. I have little hope our existing "leaders" have the ability to do that.

Give away? How much do we give away to UPMC? Pitt? CMU? Corporate welfare is business and it is a winning business. Take away UPMC from our city.

We would absorb Amazon with ease. It wasn't that long ago Pittsburgh had over 600,000 people living here. Now we have barely 300,000 and soon to go below 300,000. Will we change our status to "town" instead of "city".

Serioulsy though, Amazon wouldn't completely change everything here overnight. It would happen over decades of time and they wouldn't be our largest employer. It would be nice to have some more jobs is all. I think people are overblowing this a bit.

You obviously don't know Amazon or have followed their plans. They did plan to add all those jobs in a very short time. Your UPMC example does not apply. They are already here. Amazon would have have pushed our already far over taxed infrastructure to or past the breaking point. What every give away we have done in the past does not mean we should continue to give away the taxpayers money.

You are also playing games with numbers. The population of the city is irrelevant, it is the population of the area that matters. Many of the losses in population in the city have just moved a few miles away. You must not travel much. Our infrastructure is a disaster already.
